I don’t know about you, but when I’m sick I don’t have the mental capacity to do anything. So last week when I was sick I didn’t get anything done on my blog. Instead of writing new content, I tried promoting old posts on various sites to see what happened. And I saw a huge increase in page views! I know that blogging is not all about the page views, but I can’t help getting excited when I see my blog grow. I always promote my posts on Twitter and my personal Google+ page and last week I created a Facebook page for my blog which has slowly been gaining some followers, but I found that there are a bunch of free resources to promote your blog and bring in viewers.
My boyfriend was actually the one to suggest giving StumbleUpon a try (he loved using it in as a way to procrastinate doing homework – I’m totally not surprised). Since using StumbleUpon, I’ve realized it is a great source of page views for my blog. If you use it correctly. I think that most people browsing through StumbleUpon won’t want to see too many life updates or see what my goals for December are. I get the most page views from how to, fashion, or beauty posts. But if you use StumbleUpon you can’t just post your own content, you have to actually use the site to stumble around a bit and like/dislike other pages. Otherwise StumbleUpon knows that you’re just trying to get page views and cheat the system and will in turn not promote your posts.
All my posts get shared to my Google+ page but I never did much else after that. But last week, when I didn’t want to leave the couch, I decided to really explore the site and joined a few communities about topics I blog about then shared some of my relevant posts. For example, I shared 12 Reasons Why I’m Not Reading Your Blog into a general Blogging community and I saw a huge increase in my page views. Just from one post! I didn’t share much on Twitter and I didn’t even publish a blog post that day, but I saw my page views grow tremendously. So I decided to share more posts to other communities and I have continued seeing my page views go up!
I don’t like scheduling my tweets on social media too much. It seems much more genuine when they’re not scheduled and I like being able to respond to people. But I do love that I can schedule a few posts to refer people to my blog throughout the day. With a few scheduled tweets, I’m able to bring in blog traffic while I’m sitting in class or at the barn with no service. I think it is an extremely useful resource because it does increase your page views and it’s great if you know you’re going to be busy. Just make sure you check your notifications and respond to people when you can!
Promote Other Bloggers:
It’s weird to think that promoting another blogger or their work will bring you traffic and increase your page views, right? But I promise it works! If you share something of theirs on Twitter and tag them in the tweet, chances are they will retweet it making you visible to new people. Same thing if you write a post about them or link to their blog. Let them know through Twitter or email that you linked to their blog and they will probably check out your post and promote/share it. They may even return the favor in the future. For example, Lexi from LexBelivin featured me in a post because I started using her Instagram hashtag! So I returned the favor with The Hashtags You Need to Start Using on Instagram.
Another way I really increased my page views last week when I was too
sick lazy to write any posts was actively participating in twitter chats. It’s a great way to connect with other people and get to know them. You have to be social, respond to other people’s tweets, and be genuine! This will help you meet new people who are interested in similar stuff and who are going to visit your blog to see what it’s all about.
Twitter Chats I Love:
@HickoryFarms – #TraditionTalk Tuesdays at 1pm EST – I joined for the first time today and it was amazing! It was all about holiday traditions. Everyone was interactive, friendly, and encouraging.
@FireworkPeople – #FireworkPeopleTuesdays at 9pm EST – I started participating in this chat a few weeks ago and it’s been so motivating and inspiring! Everyone there is so positive and encouraging of others. I love being surrounding by that!
@F.B.L. Bloggers – #fblchat Tuesdays at 3pm EST & Saturdays at 10am EST – This chat was so much fun, lots of girls talking about a variety of topics! Again, everyone was so encouraging and friendly!!
Need additional help conquering social media for your blog? Katie from KatieDidWhat created a free e-course on using social media. Katie doesn’t hold anything back so you have to buy the good stuff, she offers it all out there for you! I learned so much from this course, maybe this has also contributed to my increased page views. Katie’s e-course also includes an email series where she sends out a new email once or twice a week with more incredible blogging information. Thanks Katie!
