Making the jump from Blogger to WordPress can be really intimidating. Will you actually like WordPress better? Will it be confusing? How do you move your blog? Is that difficult? Will you have to start your blog over?
I changed from Blogger to WordPress after blogging for only a few months, I had read so many great things about WordPress and that it was the way to go if I wanted to take my blog seriously. I’ll save all the positives of WordPress for another post! Self-hosted WordPress does cost money and it was a big decision to take the leap so early. But I know myself (I hate change) so I knew if I didn’t switch early I would probably never do it.
So I made the switch and was surprised at how easy moving my blog from Blogger to WordPress actually was. So don’t be intimidated and hopefully this simple step by step guide can help you!
Before beginning your move from Blogger to WordPress make sure you back up your blog! Go to Settings – Other – click Export Blog. You’ll also want to sign up for web hosting. I use BlueHost, they have great prices and you get a free domain name.
1. Download Blogger Importer Extended plugin (by Yuri Farina)
The Blogger Importer Extended plugin is much better than the built-in importer WordPress offers. Once downloaded, activate the plugin.
2. Start Importing
Return the the plugins page and click the “Start!” button.
3. Login to Google
The plugin will require you to login to your Google account to access your Blogger blog. Click the “Okay, let’s go!” button to be taken to an authorization page to login to your Google account.
4. Select which blog
Once you’re logged in, WordPress will show you which Blogger blogs you manage and you will have the chance to select which blog you want to import from Blogger to WordPress.
Keep both options selected – “convert formatting” and “preserve slugs”. Preserving slugs keeps the names of each post the same.
6. Start Import
Click the start import button and wait as your blog imports.
7. Assign User
The last step is to assign a user, this will be the author of your posts!
And it’s as easy as that! You’re all done.
Of course you will want to double check that everything has imported successfully! Click on the “Posts” category from the menu and click through them to make sure they’re all formatted correctly.
