Growing up with four older brothers, I didn’t get to learn skin care or beauty secrets. I had to look to my friends for advice and product recommendations. My skin care routines became sporadic and lazy when I didn’t see any results. As I got older, I just wasn’t happy with how my skin looked. Even when I wore makeup, my skin didn’t look great. I finally asked my mom to schedule me appointment with her dermatologist (yes I still have my mom do things for me).
They recommended some products to try and I dedicated myself to a routine. I was overjoyed when I saw improvements in my skin in just a week! So I wanted to share with you my skin care routine and some of my favorite beauty secrets!
Skin Care Routine + My Favorite Beauty Secrets
Morning
First thing I do when I wake up in the morning is wash my face! I think it is so important to wash your face in the morning. Even though you hopefully washed your face before bed, you sweat during the night and sleep on a pillow that accumulates dead skin cells and other dust all night. I love this Papaya Cleanser because it smells magnificent and leaves your skin feeling soft and revitalized.
Beauty Secret #1: Wash your pillowcases (and sheets) often! Your hair products and the natural oils from your hair leave residue on your pillowcase that clogs your pores. I like to wash our sheets & pillowcases weekly, but we have pets who are constantly on the bed, so every other week is more normal. I have also heard that sleeping with satin pillowcases is even better for your skin.
Next I apply moisturizer. It is so important to moisturize because it hydrates your skin and keeps it elastic and healthy. I want my skin to glow and look youthful so I apply moisturizer and depending on my plans for the day, I might add a moisturizer with sunblock in it. It is so important to protect your skin from the suns harmful rays because they can cause wrinkles, freckles, moles, sunspots, and skin cancer. Since I live in California where it is usually sunny, this is my go-to daily moisturizer.
Beauty Secret #2: Apply moisturizer in upward motions to prevent sagging and wrinkles!
I try to keep my makeup light so I can let my skin breathe as much as possible throughout the day. Makeup clogs your pores, so keeping things as natural as possible is ultimately better for your skin.
Evening
Beauty Secret #3: Take off your makeup as soon as you get home to let your face breathe! I like to use makeup wipes to take off any makeup and then rinse my face off with water. Make sure you take off your makeup before working out! After I workout, I like to rinse my face off with water or wipe it off with a damp (clean) towel or baby wipes. I think it keeps the sweat from drying and clogging my pores.
Before I go to bed every night I wash my face. I typically use the same Papaya Cleanser I use in the morning, but I like to use this Warming Pumpkin Enzyme Mask a few times a week. It smells so delicious like pumpkin pie and exfoliates your skin.
Beauty Secret #4: Exfoliate
Exfoliating is so great for your skin because it removes the old skin cells that clog your pores. Removing this dead layer of skin gives your face a fresh, healthy, youthful glow with a new layer of skin cells.
After washing my face, I cleanse it with this Clear-ifying Toner. I pour some onto a cotton pad and wipe all over my face, with the exception of my eye area. It does have a strong smell but it doesn’t stay on your skin and it leaves your face feeling so soft and clean. It doesn’t burn at all either which is great.
And the last thing I do before bed is apply this PM Anti-Aging Moisturizer on my face. This moisturizer is uhh-maaay-zing! It hydrates your skin and improves its elasticity. I don’t have a picture of this currently because I ran out (I always forget to order new product until I’m completely out) but I’m waiting for it in the mail!
Beauty Secret #5: When going to sleep at night, I like to pull my hair back into a loose ponytail or braid. Your hair has natural oils in it that can clog your pores and cause breakouts, so it is important to keep your hair off your face while you sleep.
After using these products for almost a year, I have seen definite improvements in my skin. My skin is softer and clearer and my pores are smaller. I am so thrilled to have finally found products that actually work. If I do get an unsightly blemish that I need to remove quickly, I use this Clinique Clearing Gel. Apply a small amount to your zit to dry it out and speed up the process of getting rid of it! If I’m trying to clear up my face I like to go au naturel but it can be worn under makeup. I also like to reapply throughout the day just to make sure I’m really killing that blemish!
Beauty Secret #6: Wash your body after you shampoo&condition. Shampoo and conditioner leave a film on your body so it is best to wash your body after your hair to wash everything off.
