I was always pretty good about washing off all my makeup, but sometimes I’d fall asleep with it on and was never extremely consistent with my skincare routine. After creating my own beauty channel on Youtube, I began to wonder why my skin never looked as gorgeous as some of the other youtubers. I’ve never had bad acne, but my skin wasn’t radiant or flawless. So I went online and did some research on getting healthier skin.
Give your skin a break
Make up can clog your pores which can lead to break outs if you don’t care for your skin properly. It’s important that you wash your face thoroughly every night, even if you don’t wear makeup, to wash off the sweat and dirt of the day.
Visit a dermatologist
Sometimes it’s easier to just go to the doctor and see what they have to say. Maybe you’re using the wrong products for your skin type or maybe you need something stronger than what the drugstore brand face washes have to offer. Your dermatologist will be able to answer any questions or concerns you have and will hopefully get you what you need. It’s also important to visit a dermatologist regularly to check your skin for skin cancer screening! Don’t feel discouraged in visiting a doctor for help.
Drink plenty of water
Your skin is the last part of your body to receive the benefits of water and the first to show the effects of being dehydrated. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated because water is so beneficial to your skin and health. It will help with under eye bags, dryness, and flushing your body and skin of toxins.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating removes the dead skin cells which leave your skin looking dull and dry. Allowing these dead skin cells to build up can result in clogged pores and oilier skin, which increases your chances of blemishes. Removing these dead skin cells reveals fresh cells below and gives you a healthier, fresher appearance. It also allows for your skin care products to work more effectively by penetrating deeper into your skin.
My recent fave has been the Tarte Frxxxtion Stick Exfoliating Cleanser. It leaves my skin feeling extremely soft and looking radiant. You can also use a chemical exfoliant which uses AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids – products containing glycolic or lactic acids), BHAs (beta hydroxy acids – products containing salicylic acids), or enzymes that wash away your dead skin cells.
Wear sunscreen
The sun is so hard on your skin and can cause many issues down the road. It can cause premature wrinkles, moles, and even skin cancer. This is why it’s so important to wear sunscreen on your face (or any parts of your body that will be exposed to the sun). And I hate to admit that I don’t always follow this, I have always disliked the smell and feel of sunscreen.
Stick to a routine
Be consistent when it comes to washing your face. Figure out a routine that works for you and stick to it. Just make sure you wash your face when you wake up and at the end of the day. Your skin produces oils and accumulates allergens and other debris from your pillowcase while you sleep so it’s important to wash those off. Washing off the dirt, sweat, and makeup from the day is important to keep your pores from getting clogged. This is especially important for oily or acne prone skin.
Keep hair off your face
Your hair also produces oils that can clog your pores and result in blemishes on your face (and even your back/shoulders/etc). Try to keep your hair pulled back out of your face when you sleep and wash your pillowcases frequently.
Treat yourself
My last tip is to splurge a little! Treat yourself to a facial or a relaxing massage to relieve stress. Maybe make it a girls date. And if there’s a face mask or something you want that’s a little more expensive, go ahead and get it!
