With sharing my favorite recipe for deviled eggs yesterday, and my increasing boredom because of my cable and wifi STILL being down, I decided to get creative with my deviled eggs. I decided to make Easter themed Deviled Eggs! It was a fun way to pass my day and get in the spirit for Easter!
Easter Themed Deviled Eggs: Dyeing your Deviled Eggs
You will need:
Cold water
Vinegar
Food coloring (I used McCormick’s neon 4 pack)
First, you will need to make hard boiled eggs (if you don’t know how, see my post from yesterday – it includes directions for making hard boiled eggs). Once you halve the eggs, scoop out the yolks and set them aside for later.
You will also need as many bowls for as many different colors that you want to dye your eggs. Fill them about 3/4 of the way with cold water (enough that they will cover the egg) and add 1 tsp vinegar and 3-4 drops food coloring. Put your eggs into the bowls and let them sit until they are the color you want!
NOTE: I used a spoon to mix the color or check the color of the eggs as they were dyeing and then put the spoon in with the dirty dishes. I went through almost all of our spoons doing this when I finally realized that I should have just left one in each bowl.
As the eggs were dyeing, I made the filling! Once the eggs were the colors I wanted, I pulled them out and set them on a paper towel to dry a bit. Then spoon or pipette the filling and you’re done!
Easter Themed Deviled Eggs: Hatching Chicks
Again, you will need to start with hard boiled eggs. Take the bottom (bigger side) and cut a thin layer off to make a flat base so the egg will stand on its own. Then instead of cutting the eggs in half, cut a zigzag pattern around the middle of the egg. Remove the yolk and make your filling.
You will need to create a ziplock bag pipette for these eggs. Once your mixture is complete, spoon into the bag and fill the bottom half of the egg “shell”. Make sure to put enough that when you put the top half on, there is still some yellow showing. Use a small slice of carrot for the nose and peppercorns for the eyes. I was all ready to give my chicks a face when I realized we didn’t have any carrots OR peppercorns, so I improvised with some left over candy corn!
Now relax and enjoy your Easter themed deviled eggs! It took quite a bit of work and made a big mess (I used too many dishes and spilled food coloring all over myself). But overall I think they turned out great!
