I know this post is pretty late for our Reading Lately linkup, but I’ve mentioned before that life has been pretty crazy lately. But I needed to get more blog posts up and I wanted you to know what I’ve been reading lately! But I’m back with Michelle from Michelle Lately and Alison from Puppies & Pretties bringing you our latest Reading Lately!

Reading Lately

Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah
I had read a review on Goodreads that said to be patient with the book and give it time because it starts slowly. I’m glad I did. The book started extremely slow, it was very hard to get into. It was an eye opening novel to the horrors of war in Russia and it was interesting to read about. The ending was very unrealistic and weird, but the book was still an interesting read.

Dear John by Nicholas Sparks
I thought the book was well written, the author subtly draws you in and keeps you reading. The first half was better than the second, in my opinion, because most of the action occurred there. John is a rebellious teen who turns to the army for discipline and returns home on leave where he runs into a girl named Savannah. The two quickly fall in love, except John must return overseas. Savannah vows to wait for him and John promises to return and marry her. Their distance takes its toll on their relationship, and Savannah ultimately sends him a Dear John letter. After the letter, the book gets very depressing and a little unrealistic. Everything bad or sad that could happen to John, does. I really like how he turns out to be a respectful and selfless person in the end of the book. It really frustrated me that Savannah promised to wait but couldn’t, as if her struggles were more difficult than what John was doing overseas.

Where the Memories Lie by Sibel Hodge
Olivia’s friend (Katie) disappears, when they are and everyone believes she ran away. After twenty-five years with no word from her, Olivia’s father in law admits to her that he killed her. Nobody wants to believe his confession because he is sick with Alzheimer’s, but the body turns up exactly where he says. The story is about discovering the truth behind the confession and what happened to Katie. I was impressed that I could not figure out who the murderer was until the end of the novel. I love mystery novels, and I like them even more when I can’t figure them out.

The Murderer’s Daughter by Jonathan Kellerman
This book wasn’t really a mystery, more of a thriller. But it wasn’t really that thrilling. But I still enjoyed the novel. The story is about Grace Blades, an intelligent introverted child who grows up to be an extremely successful psychologist. There was a lot of insight into the reasons behind people’s actions which was interesting. This story also shows that people can be successful despite trauma in their past and who their parents were. I thought it was weird that Grace received such extensive self defense training, as if she was expecting her past to catch up with her at some point. It didn’t make sense for a psychologist to be that worried about her life. It still was a good read.
